A
surprise announcement was made last Thursday 26 October at the Sunshine
Mothers
Group Public Meeting about the Sunshine Pool.
A representative from the Labor Party announced that a 25M swimming
pool from the World Swimming Championships to be held at Rod Laver
Arena in March 2007 would be relocated to Sunshine in May 2007 and
be an additional part of the Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre redevelopment. The
new pool, pump house and equipment and installation costs were all
to be done at no cost to Brimbank ratepayers as installation costs
will be fully funded by the State Governement.
The
ALP representative Henry Barlow said he was sent to the meeting by
Justin Madden and that while it was only a 25 metre pool the ALP
has committed to funding an outdoor pool model at Sunshine Swim & Leisure
Centre similar to the North Melbourne complex that the Mothers Group
were recently shown by representatives of the Minister’s
office and Bruce Mildenhall MP.
Mr. Barlow emphasised repeatedly that the offer to Sunshine was not
an election promise but a rock solid commitment by the ALP which
would see the problems relating to the outdoor pools in Sunshine resolved
once and
for all.
Mr. Barlow told those in attendance that the installation of the
new technology outdoor 25M pool would be a contiguous operation as
part
of the current redevelopment and would therefore save hundreds of
thousands of dollars in construction fees.
Mr Barlow advised the meeting that the Sunshine outdoor pools plan
will also save approx $1 million for Brimbank’s residents
as the State Government will wear much of the cost of the relocation
and provision of a state of the art heated outdoor pool and associated
North Melbourne style complex.
The announcement was then confirmed on Friday 27 October by the Minister
for Sports and Recreation Justin Madden and John Brumby advising those
present at the Broadmeadows Swim
and Leisure
Centre
that
a World
Championships
25M pool had been allocated to Sunshine.
Further confirmation of the minister's decision was
distributed on Monday (30 October)
by State MP Bruce Mildenhall in a letter
to all Sunshine
residents confirming
the
Minister’s
allocation of one of the World Swimming Championship pools to Brimbank
for the
Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre!
The Trades Hall Executive have also fully endorsed the new outdoor pool
complex for Sunshine at its last meeting.
Despite
many in the community calling for a 50 metre pool for Sunshine, a
North Melbourne style outdoor complex will be a huge boost for the
65000 youth and families in the Sunshine Pool catchment area and
it could not come any sooner!
Congratulations
to the Ministers, members and Brimbank Councilors for
achieving this great step toward bringing some much needed exercise
and leisure
space to our community and achieving a pool re-development that will
now be more profitable with mixed useage water spaces that will have
the potential to attract children, teenagers and adults of all ages.
